Manufacturing Aircraft Components in Iran

A Strategic Step Towards Self-Sufficiency and Development of the Aviation Industry

The aviation industry has always been one of the most advanced  and sensitive industries worldwide . mDue to its high  level of technology and safety

requirements

, its development demands extensive technical infrastructure and engineering knowledge. Among these, the domestic production of aircraft components is

recognized as one of the most important pillars of independence and stability in the aviation industry. In recent years,Iran has made significant efforts to

localize the knowledge of designing and manufacturing key aircraft components.

Why Is Domestic Manufacturing of Aircraft Components Important

Dependence on foreign suppliers for aircraft consumables and spare parts creates challenges such as high foreign exchange costs, long supply times, problems

arising from international sanctions, and sometimes lack of access to some vital equipment. On the other hand m, with the development of the domestic flight

network and the increase in fleet size, the continuous demand for standard spare parts has grown significantly.

Iran’s Existing Capacities in Aircraft Component Manufacturing

For decades, Iran’s defense and aerospace industries have gained experience in producing various precise mechanical, electronic, and composite parts. These

capabilities have now increasingly served the civilian aviation industry. Currently:

Some structural parts—including metal wing components, wing roots, hooks, fixtures, and even parts of the landing gear—are produced by domestic industries.

In fuel, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, a number of valves, fittings, and connectors with acceptable quality have been localized.

Challenges and Opportunities in the Path of Localizing Aircraft Components

Challenges

Quality and compliance with international standards: The aviation industry is heavily regulated, and standards such as FAR,EASA Part 21G, and AS9100 require

a very high level of quality control. Many domestic manufacturers still need to improve their implementation of these standards.

Access to standard raw materials : Aerospace-grade materials like 7000-series aluminum , titanium alloys , and special epoxy resins are not readily available in

the domestic market.

Specialized laboratories  and testing equipment : Conducting fatigue , vibration , and environmental tests (humidity & temperature cycling) requires expensive

equipment that is not yet fully available in all sectors.

Opportunities

The presence of military industries and excellent technical universities that can define joint research projects with the aviation industry. Government support

and innovation  fund facilities  accelerate the development  of these industries . The country’s experience in overcoming sanctions has led to the formation of

semi-domestic supply networks for some raw materials.

Key Steps for Sustainable Development of This Industry

If Iran aims to capture a larger share of the domestic aircraft components market, it must seriously pursue the following actions:

Investment in advanced production lines: The use of five-axis CNC machining, isostatic presses, modern autoclaves, and metal 3D printers is essential to

achieve precise tolerances.

Establishing and expanding testing centers: Material and component performance laboratories must be equipped according to AS9102 and NADCAP

standards to issue valid quality certificates for production.

Obtaining international certifications: Receiving Part 21 certifications or even licensing cooperation with prominent OEMs can globally enhance the

credibility of domestic production.

Structural and fluid dynamics considerations in the design of critical parts are essential.

Summary: A Bright Future with Synergy of Knowledge and Industry

Despite all challenges, Iran has made very important strides in aircraft component manufacturing over the past decade. Investing in this sector not only

reduces foreign dependence and conserves foreign currency but can also provide a platform for the growth of advanced engineering  technologies  within

the country . The future of  Iran’s  aviation  industry  is closely  linked to the synergy  between  universities , defense  industries , private holdings , and

government  support . With  these  collaborations , it is  expected  that  in the  coming  years , a wider range  of aircraft  components  will be  produced

domestically, and Iran will become a significant center for aerospace component manufacturing in the region.
