What Is a Turbofan and What Are Its Advantages

A turbofan engine is a type of jet engine in which, in addition to the air passing through the combustion chamber, a large portion of air is accelerated by a large

fan at the front of the engine and bypasses the engine core without burning.This design increases propulsion efficiency andreduces fuel consumption compared to

older turbojet engines.

Turbofans are particularly suitable for passenger and transport aircraft because they:

Iran’s Efforts in Turbofan Development

Over the past decades, Iranian experts have launched numerous projects in the field of turbojet and  turbofan engines  with the aim of  indigenizing  advanced

aviation technologies. In this journey, the design and production of the  Iranian “Owj” turbofan engine  (a localized version of a Russian engine)  represents

a significant milestone. According to domestic sources, this engine is structurally and functionally close to the RD-33 family, which powers MiG-29 fighter jets.

However, Iranian engineers have made various changes in materials , control systems V, and even the aerodynamics of the blades to adapt the  engine to Iran’s

climatic conditions and the operational needs of its armed forces.

Challenges in Design and Production

Building a turbofan engine is considered the most complex part of the aerospace industry. In these projects, engineers must solve challenges such as:

Withstanding extremely high turbine temperatures (sometimes exceeding 1400°C)

In addition, the quality of materials used in the turbine blades, which must endure extreme thermal and mechanical stress, is of critical importance. In Iran,

superalloys and heat- and corrosion-resistant coatings have been utilized to produce these components.

Applications of the Iranian Turbofan Engine

With the deployment of domestically  developed  turbofan  engines , Iran can gradually reduce its reliance on  imported engines . These engines can be used in:

Upgraded fourth-generation fighter jets

Large UAVs with extended endurance

And in the future, indigenous passenger aircraft projects

Moreover, the experience gained from designing and building these engines lays a valuable foundation for future development of high-bypass turbofan

engines, which are widely used in commercial aviation.

The Road Ahead

Given the pressures from sanctions and the difficulty of procuring advanced engines, continued investment in R&D projects in the field of aircraft propulsion is

inevitable for Iran . By developing a  domestic turbofan engine , Iran  not only  meets its  defensive and military needs  but can also eventually consider

exporting related technologies and products.

Furthermore, the development of such projects supports the growth of key industrial sectors, including specialty steels, heat-resistant ceramics, electronics,

and precision control systems—contributing significantly to employment and national industrial progress.
